- Do you have additional experience to add to your skills such as hospitality, health & fitness, trade, childcare, culinary or watersports?
- Do you have USD 4,800 / ZAR 70,000 PLUS to afford the necessary courses, medical, accommodation, return flight, visa, etc.?
- Are you okay with taking orders from your superiors?
- Are you a hard-working person who won’t mind working long hours?
- Are you confident and will you be able to “sell yourself” when “dock walking” or meeting with crew agents, Captains and / or Chief Stews?
- Are you a fit, healthy individual with no pre-existing health conditions such as epilepsy, cancer, diabetes, or depression? (This is compulsory as you will fail your ENG1 / SAMSA seafarers medical, and you can’t be employed on any vessel)
- Will you be okay being away from home for months at a time?
- Will you be happy to live with other crew members in confined spaces?
- Will you be okay with doing the “dirty work” as a junior on board whilst climbing the ranks?
- Can you handle seasickness?

Get to know me and my story
In 2009, I saw a picture on Facebook of a friend in uniform on board a yacht somewhere beautiful and exotic. Of course, this piqued my interest immediately and prompted me to ask where on earth she was and what she was doing.
At the time I was living and working in London where, as you may know, it is rather cold and gloomy. This was my 5th year living and working in London, so I knew I was in desperate need of a change of scenery – somewhere warmer, preferably.
